Gamecocks take region title over JC Warriors: JCHS to host first round of state playoffs Saturday
The Jefferson County Warriors ended their 9-game winning streak Friday, but were the first team to score on Region 4-AA Champion Screven County Gamecocks since Sept. 1.
The Gamecocks upheld their reputation as a tough, in-your-face, dominant force Friday, scoring 17 un-answered points in the first quarter of the final game of both undefeated team’s regular season.
During the opening drive Screven’s senior-heavy team muscled 74 yards in just four plays to score their first touchdown of the night.
The Gamecocks took a safety when a deeply pinned Warrior snap sailed out of the back of the end zone and then ground out a short 38 yards to score again.
The Warriors put their first points on the board in the opening seconds of the second quarter when junior quarterback Jaden Jenkins connected with Tahkwon King on a 27 yard pass. Evans Hodges added the extra point.
Jefferson County scored twice more in the fourth quarter, on passes to King and JaDarius Hector, but it was too late to overcome the Gamecock’s lead.
In all, the Warriors put up 380 yards of total offense to the Gamecocks’ 224, but had had a interception for a pick-6 and at least one long touchdown run called back on a holding call.
The Gamecocks took the region championship 44-20.
Senior QB CJ Hales completed 14 passes for 183 yards and two touchdowns and had 10 carries for 65 yards. Jenkins completed four passes for 26 yards and a TD and carried the ball 11 times for 26 yards.
Nikel Stone had seven carries for 48 yards and caught five passes for another 62 yards. Hector had five catches for 70 yards and King had five for 68.
Clin Tucker, Desmond Beale and Xavier Magee all also contributed to the Warriors’ offensive yardage.
This Saturday, the Warriors will host Southwest Macon’s Patriots the first round of the playoffs. The Patriots are currently 5-4 after having beat Bleckley County 26-21, East Laurens 36-7 and Northeast Macon 18-7, while losing to Dodge County 38-14, Dublin 22-14 and Washington County 34-14.
