Gordy would like to see county building revitalized

Dear Editor:

Recently I happened to be on the courthouse square and noticed the historic red brick building which sadly has fallen into disrepair.

When I was a boy, this structure housed the Jefferson County Health Department. At that time the late Mrs. Annie Baxter, who lived to be about 106 years old, was county nurse, and Mrs. Cleone Barrow was the secretary.

More recently, the structure served as offices for the county commission and the county water department.

Now it has been abandoned, with the cement walls peeling. For one I feel it should be repaired by inmates and put to use.

Perhaps my friend Mr. Leroy Lewis can tell us when the building was erected and for what purpose.

The late warden Mr. George Smith kept the inmates busy.

Iím sure the structure could be put to good use, such as once again serving as the commission office. Am I wrong in saying the office now being used for that purpose is leased?
