Glascock County had no child
deaths for the 2006 calendar
year, and no deaths as of the
date of the meeting.
Prevention programs for the last
year were discussed. Sheriff
Couch made available free gun
locks throughout the county for
anyone with a firearm. Judge
May sent gun locks to school,
and several of the elementary
school classes discussed firearm
safety.
Mr. Holton reported that at the
beginning of every school year,
teachers are reminded of their
obligation as mandatory child
abuse reporters. The school
system also shows a bus safety
movie to all students. In addition,
during prom time, a safety
"ghost-out" movie is shown to
emphasize safety during the
prom. The Sheriff and Mr. Holton
worked jointly to produce a
program involving an inmate
convicted of vehicular homicide
speak to the students on the
dangers of drinking and driving.
The schools and county also
participated in Red Ribbon Drug
Awareness Week activities, and
F i r e S a f e t y a n d P r e v e n t i o n
W e e k a c t i v i t i e s . F o r t h e
upcoming summer, other safety
instructions will be given.
D F C S a n d M e n t a l H e a l t h
Department always have educational
pamphlets available, and
work closely with new mothers
on such issues as co-sleeping.
Both departments also have suicide
prevention materials, which
is especially important for teenagers.
Several agencies are working
together on an "at risk children"
program which will include
children and families.
For the next year, the Sheriff is
trying to schedule the "Smoke
House" to come to the Fall Festival
to promote fire safety.
Additionally, he is checking on
sponsoring a Child Seat Safety
Check in conjunction with the
Georgia State Patrol. The school
system will repeat last year's
activities including the convicted
inmate program. DFCS
and Mental Health will continue
with their educational efforts,
including working toward a free
bike helmet program for children.
There being no other business,
the meeting was adjourned.
